Prof. Anuttama Banerjee,
Usha Martin Academy

My practice as a psychologist helps me understand the issues, aspirations and behavior of students better, while my interaction with students of Usha Martin Academy helps me evolve as a psychologist.” she says.

To West Bengal, Dr. Anuttama Banerjee needs no introduction. Apart from being the Academic Head of Management Programmes at Usha Martin Academy, Salt Lake, Dr. Banerjee is a celebrated Psychologist whose opinion is actively sought by Print media and TV channels on the psychological aspects of Socio- political issues. She is often seen on Star Anondo (now known as ABP Anondo) on issues range from increasing criminal offences amongst college students, to negative impact of corporal punishment on students, as well as witch hunting and immolating in villages of West Bengal. In recent times, her views on increase in rate of suicides have been observed on News Time, while Tara Muzichas aired her expert opinion on how to tackle various kinds of phobia, and how to cope with the ups and downs in relationship. Interestingly, she was also quoted extensively in the cover story of the latest edition of Sanonda, an iconic Bengali women-oriented magazine on the subject of psycho-biological problems faced by men once they reach the age of 40, suggesting ways for women to be more helpful during this transition.

To a casual observer, Professor Anuttama Banerjee’s ability to balance two demanding professions – as a recognised Psychologist, and the Academic Head of Usha Martin Academy, Salt Lake - is nothing short of spectacular; to Professor Banerjee herself both these jobs have a deeply symbiotic relation.

“My practice as a psychologist helps me understand the issues, aspirations and behavior of students better, while my interaction with students of Usha Martin Academy helps me evolve as apsychologist.”

Professor Anuttama Banerjee's key focus at Usha Martin Academy (UMA) is HR in general, and Organization Behaviour in particular.

“Joining UMA Salt Lake was a decision based on the fact that the institute has a strong industry background, and also because I enjoy being surrounded by young and vibrant people. UMA is dynamic and actually looks at the needs of the corporate sector. I feel gratified by the fact that I am able to address areas where young minds can be groomed, so that when they actually join an industry they can feel so much better about themselves.”

Professor Banerjee is especially intrigued by the application of psychology to make healthier and vibrant workplaces. It is in this context that she lays immense stress on MDP’s and FDP’s at UMA.

"The Management Development and Faculty Development Programmes we conduct at UMA, helps bridge the gap between academics and industry. We are all in a very dynamic era. If we do not change, if HR does not change, the organization will not develop. Two aspects – Organizational Development and HR Development – are both equally important sides of a company's coin. If one outgrows the other they will not be staying with each other. One has to complement the other."

It is this mantra that Professor Anuttama Banerjee brings to UMA. She believes children and young people are far more accepting of change, as compared to the older generation.

"They are born in a different time. When I am with them I have to be updated. If I don't develop, I cannot meet with their need.”

Professor Anuttama Banerjee believes that at UMA, it is the students who are in the drivers seat, leading the discussions in the classroom with Faculty gently guiding them in the right direction. It is clearly a paradigm shift in the way management education is being perceived; possible only when a luminary of the stature of Dr. Anuttama Banerjee is at the helm of affairs.
